Stars that Slumber

bedroom1

Here it is, the first in a series of posts dedicated to our house. Starting with the bedroom. It is safe to say that minimal is not really in my vocabulary. I am also very lucky to have a boyfriend who doesn't mind sleeping in my overly feminine 'museum' disguised as a bedroom. Craig has a room that holds all of his stuff, and that's where he stores his drums. We met in the middle on the decor for the living room which is a combination of our tastes, you will get to see that in the next ' abode' post.

One day I would love to have a glamourous Art Deco room worthy of a Busby Berkeley film, but for now this space makes me happy.

My Grandparents lived in Malaysia for years and got to visit most of the world thanks to my Grandads job. My granny has always collected antiques so their home was filled with unusual pieces mixed in with all the beautiful things brought back from their time in Malaysia.
I have always been very close to my Gran and her tastes have defintely inspired my own, not to mention that a lot of the things seen here have been given to me by her over the years.
The 'tent' above our bed has been made from Malaysian fabrics that she saved for me.

Any one who has watched it will also see how much I have been inspired by Carnivale, I am totally and untterly in love with that show.

I have deliberatley not put any commentary underneath the pictures as I fear this post would go on forever! Most of my things have been collected over a life time of being a sucker for Bygone Era's and for having been brought up in a sleepy retirement area.  Cheap charity shops used to be in abundance ( sadly not so much anymore).

If you would like to know more about anything you see in the pictures just ask in a comment and I will happily explain in a personal reply.

Hope you all have a wonderful week
Kelly-Marie xx

  4. You are such an immensely talented woman! This post has given me so much inspiration to impose some sort of order on my own scraggly bedroom. I will have to bring you something else back from Malaysia to add to the mix! And the charity shops way out west are cheap and abundant so feel free to come explore with me any time! :) xxx

  5. You're so right about charity shops. I think the fact 'vintage' became so mainstream means that you literally can't find anything good anymore and if you do nothing that hasn't had it's price massively hiked up. Sad times.

Love your dressing table by the way.

  13. WOW! I actually had to look at the photos a few times to take it all in. Your bedroom is a party for the eyes! It puts my boring one to shame! I really adore how you've made it into such a beautiful place that's so unique to you and what you love. My favourite piece has to be the dresser, sadly my room is too small to have a dresser so I have to keep all of my make up and jewellery in drawers and not on display which is where I would like them. It's such an unusual shape and I love the circular mirror! I love the lights and lampshades too! It's so lovely to see that your creativity and passion is expressed this way too!

    Thanks for showing us

    Emma x

    1. Thank you Emma! I'm so happy you like it. I love my dresser to. It's a late 1920's one and only cost me £20. My Dad found it for me in a town called Bridport on the south coast. Craig and I travelled all the way down to get it. x

    2. £20?? that is unbelievable! I'm always trying to keep an eye out for homeware in my local oxfam home, it's great but expensive! There's no comparison between your dresser for £20 and a generic ikea one! it's so pretty! :)

  14. Oh my goodness, so much to see! I adore your bedroom! And your dressing table and your cushions and, well, everything else, really! I've been meaning to get into Carnivale for ages now, I think I might finally watch an episode tonight!

I love that we have the same album of cigarette cards :) Great minds and all that.

  17. Dear Kelly, that's just right up my alley. I love looking at these photos again and again cause everytime I spot something new. Like you I'm not into minimalism at all. Everybody says: "Simplify your life!" and don't own to much things. But I like to collect a lot of things and the abundance is never a problem for me. From time to time I even love to clean my huge glass collection and so on. And if at some time I don't want to clean anything I don't do it. It doesn't bother me if there's some dust on my beloved collections. Hugs from a collector of collections aka Miss Maple

  18. Exquisite. Looking forward to future room blogs.

I no longer have possessions (apart from just books) but what I do have is a small red treasure chest given to me as a Christmas present many years ago. It contains, amongst other things a coin from George V's time and some of my grandfather's stamps from all over the world dating right back to the forties, he was an ardent philatelist (I donated literally hundreds of his stamps to a Blue Peter charity appeal). Oh yes, also a collection of those cards one used to get with PG tips tea with the chimps on them, I've lost the key so will have to break it open at some point. I'll probably sell some of the stuff.

    1. Oh the treasure chest sounds lovely Rehan and I am very impressed that you donated the stamps to a Blue Peter appeal.
I often dream of having my room just like an old Library, just books on the wall. I do like all my old artifacts, they are just as important to me as books as creatively they inspire me in the same way. I feel like I have found my happy medium, although if I move I will have to dedicate more space to my books as i'm running out.

    2. Also, old bank notes from Bahrain, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico & Libya 'Issued in the name of King Idris I' and India. I have bookshop dreams, mostly around the Bloomsbury area where sadly some of my favourite book haunts have disappeared in recent years. I do have an awful lot of books. Where I live now I have had to double up the bookshelves for lack of space and for the dread of moving again - but this was snapped up at my last abode.

    1. Love it! Those shelves are brilliant. I recently went to the National Trust property 'Kindston Lacy', the library there is what dreams are made of! I'm going to do a post on it so you will see. Oh gosh yes a book shop in Bloomsbury would be perfect. So sad that so many have closed down considering it's history. I used to study just up from there, such a lovely part of London.

  27. I have tears in my eyes, this is the most charming bedroom EVER. I love your taste in everything but it's no doubt that you certainly have a talent for styling and decorating. The way you put all this different parts together is wonderful. (And the shade of blue on your wall is the best blue in the world. It's my favorite.) Fingers crossed for the Art Deco bedroom, I always admire the bedroom in Top Hat and Jean Harlow's glorious space in Dinner at Eight. Not fair at all.
