Animals Around Us

Edith Holden was the 1980's Edwardian sweetheart. Most people know of her for the 'Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady' fame (and let's face it who hasn't spotted a copy in their local charity shop at some point), but for most people they know no more of her than those beautiful illustrations.

It wasn't until I found this copy of 'Animals Around Us' that I decided to learn about her life properly, and so started my love affair with this special lady.

As you can see from this book she was an avid nature and animal lover and she used her incredible talent to support early animal welfare charities.

Her sister married a vegetarian (very rare for the time) and Edith's family were spiritualists who held local seances. Her Mother could automatic write and was said to carry on communicating through Edith's sister long after she had died.

For so many reasons she is my kind of lady and now I feel so lucky to own such a treasure in this  original 1921 copy of Edith's work.

 

 
I have only scanned in a selection of her illustrations and in the book they are all accompanied by beautiful and informative poems about each animal. I know how my kids are going to be doing their learning (no matter how much they would rather have a kindle)!

Woods Wail Like Echoes From The Sea

The above items in the shop were all inspired by Mrs William Rawnsley and the Autumn months from her book 'The New Forest'.  It was one of the first things I found when we first moved back from London.
The Rawnsley's are an important part of the history of the forest and being the book geek that I am, I saw finding this book a sure sign that we were home now.

Mrs Rawnsley beautifuly curated book is a month by month account of the seasons changing, combining her writing and illustrations with wonderful Edwardian poetry like the Rossetti example above.

 I have read every month since we moved back and it is fast approaching us being here a year now.
I am so happy and excited to see the Autumn months in this magical place and to see if much has really changed since 1904.


So yes the shop has taken an Autumnal tumble (sorry to all of you in the Southern Hemisphere), but something I know you can all appreciate is the big 'H' word! Keep your eyes peeled for more Halloween themed items arriving this week and click on any of the photo's in this post to visit the shop.

Drying Herbs

  

Seeing these photographs last year on Hannah's wonderful blog, started my love affair with Kinfolk (a little late to the party)! Now that Autumn is most definitely creeping it's way in to our lives (and my heart is singing about it) this editorial has been on my mind. You know what else has been on my mind? You lot!

Thank you all so much for your lovely, lovely comments on my last post. At the moment I seem to be in a constant battle with my soul about time spent on the internet... Well, really i'm just trying to spend a lot less time on it!

Pretty tricky when my shop and a lot of my work is based online! Really it all just comes down to prioritising and not living my life through the computer (and my phone)!

What I HAVE missed is reading all the wonderful and inspiring blogs of yours... That's why I started this little part of the internet in the first place, and I really have been missing having time to spend on it. I guess it all just comes down to balance.

Shop Update: Sweet Rosie

As my Instagram followers will know we had a very beautiful (almost ethereal) Lion Head Rabbit called Harlequin. We sadly lost him recently to that big Bunny warren in the sky, he really was such a special guy and we like to think he is now happy and reunited with his one true love.

Small animals are such heart breakers and we vowed never to put ourselves through it again. That is until we met Rosie, a giant French Lop in desperate need of a new home. She helped us and we helped her and I definitely think that Harli would approve, she is very happy.

So this post is dedicated to Harlequin, to Rosie and to all you fellow Bunny owners out there. As my friend Ava once said, Rabbits have a very special way of getting a hold of your heart.
